The liver is an organ that has over 500 different functions in the body. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is an herb well known for supporting liver health and function.† Silymarin is the most active compound found in milk thistle, concentrated in its fruit and seeds. Silymarin is a fat‑soluble compound, meaning it does not easily mix with the watery contents of the digestive tract. However, when silymarin is combined with lecithin, a natural fatty acid, its absorption increases dramatically.† Lecithin is a natural source of phosphatidylcholine, which is found in cell membranes, so it is easily absorbed and integrated into the body’s cells.† When combined with lecithin, silymarin may be more easily transported and available to the liver.†

For over 2000 years, milk thistle has been widely used as a herb that supports the liver. The seeds from the dried flower of milk thistle are, in particular, rich in silymarin—a bioflavonoid complex that is responsible for the herb’s powerful protective and regenerative properties for the liver.†
According to studies, silymarin may support and enhance healthy liver function through several ways: 1) by preventing harmful toxins from entering the cell from the membrane, 2) reducing or preventing oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals with silymarin’s antioxidant properties, and 3) enhancing levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase, which are the two primary antioxidants in the liver.
