S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) is an internally produced compound found in every cell of the human body that is involved in more than 100 biochemical reactions. SAMe is naturally synthesized in humans from the energy molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the amino acid methionine in the presence of adequate levels of folate and vitamin B12. SAMe is highly concentrated in the liver, adrenal glands, and pineal gland, and it is uniformly distributed throughout the brain.

SAMe is integral to cellular energy metabolism and homeostasis, as it serves as the body’s principal methyl donor, a molecule that is added to another compound (e.g., DNA, protein) to support that compound’s proper function in the body. This process is called methylation, a continuous cycle that is involved in the synthesis and healthy functioning of neurotransmitters, phospholipids, proteins, hormones, DNA and RNA, polyamines, and glutathione (the body’s master antioxidant). Proper functioning of these substances are critical for optimal nervous, cardiovascular, and immune system activity, hormone balance, detoxification, genetic expression and modification, and energy production.

Philosophy Nutrition’s SAMe capsules provide 200 mg of stabilized S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) per capsule to support biochemical pathways crucial to healthy cellular metabolism that require a steady source of SAMe. These capsules also provide vitamins B6, B12, and folate, which are nutrient cofactors required for the proper and efficient function of SAMe.

The natural aging process, dietary deficiency of methionine, folate, vitamins B12 and B6 (i.e., poor protein intake, vegan/vegetarian diets), inflammatory states, emotional/physical stressors, and genetic variants all contribute to suboptimal levels of SAMe and, thus, may increase demand for this essential compound.

Benefits :

  • Helps support brain function and memory
  • May encourage a positive mental outlook and balanced mood
  • Supports healthy liver function
  • Helps support antioxidant status

SAMe vegetarian capsules deliver 200 mg of S-adenosyl-methionine in acid-resistant capsules that provide both protection and pH targeted release in intestinal fluid. SAMe has been shown to support neurotransmitters and mood, methylation, liver health, and joints.†

SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) is a naturally occurring molecule derived from the amino acid methionine. SAMe has been shown to be efficacious in supporting numerous aspects of health. SAMe, as a methyl donor, participates in a wide variety of biochemical reactions, acts as a precursor molecule for glutathione and polyamine synthesis, and supports healthy functioning of neurological processes, joints, and the liver.† SAMe is a methyl donor in the methylation reactions shown to form monoamine neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Human studies show SAMe supports a positive mood and healthy central nervous system function.† SAMe is also essential to the development of the phospholipid bilayer that makes up the outer membranes of normal cells by contributing to phosphatidylcholine production and cellular membrane fluidity and integrity.†

SAMe’s joint support lies not only in its ability to help regulate the body’s normal physiological processes, but also on its putative participation in proteoglycan synthesis and joint cartilage synthesis.

SAMe is thought to function physiologically as a signal of sulfur availability. Some suggest that supplemental S-adenosylmethionine may compensate for the decreased SAMe levels in chondrocytes induced by the cytokine interleukin-1, and thus upregulate the chondrocyte’s synthesis of joint proteoglycans. A randomized control study of 56 participants taking SAM-e offered statistically significant results for joint comfort.†

As a liver health compound, SAMe has been shown to support the body’s response to adverse biochemical alterations induced by lead and/or alcohol exposure.† SAMe can be an integral part of a liver support regimen by supporting glutathione levels. Human studies indicate that SAM-e supplementation enhances glutathione production in hepatic tissue and red blood cells.†
