N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is a precursor for the amino acid cystein—a protein which is used to make glutathione, which is one of the most powerful antioxidants in our body. Our body cells are constantly threatened by toxic free radicals, which are produced in our body’s daily functions. Free radicals are particularly dangerous because when they damage body cells and tissues, the damage can result in even more toxins. A steady, reliable supply of antioxidants may be important to preventing many degenerative diseases.†

Glutathione can be taken as a supplement itself, but it cannot be passed through the cell membrane and thus is mostly limited to extracellular activity. Because NAC can be transported easily into the cell to be then converted, NAC may be an ideal form to raise glutathione levels within the cell. While cysteine is the more direct precursor to glutathione, the protein is inherently toxic and is not advised as a supplement, compared to the virtually non-toxic and well-absorbed NAC.

Philosophy Nutrition’s NAC contains 750 mg of pure N-acetyl-L-cysteine. It may be useful for increasing antioxidants that are produced from cysteine, especially for within cells. Even before being converted, NAC is thought to have antioxidant properties itself. It is a valuable sulfur donor for our metabolism. For raising glutathione levels both within and outside of cells, this product may be taken with gluathione.
